Jakob Thau and Sami Kallio are fascinated by materials and methods. They share a deep affinity for wood and hand craftsmanship, with a firm focus on the components that make up any given design. Together they are revitalising the Nordic narrative by applying classic techniques in new expressions.
Thau and Kallio have a design office with furniture workshop in both Copenhagen and Gothenburg, where the prototypes are created hands-on and tested by the designers themselves fore moving on to cooperation with the right furniture manufacturer.
Thau and Kallio aim to create furniture that enhances professional, creative and production standards in the industry. The inspiration they often find in the flow of society and the people around them.

“We wish to create durability both emotionally and in terms of quality, on the basis of realistic and simple ideas. We always take account of new industrial production processes right from the start, without ever losing sight of the creative idea”.
Driving power is the love of good craftsmanship and curiosity after challenging new and well-known materials. In this way, Thau and Kallio find the ideas to create both visionary, different – but also traditionally – furniture design. The goal is to make long-lasting quality products that can withstand and patinate beautifully and be passed on for future generations.
One of the upshots of their design collaboration is Betty, a new chair imbued with an old soul. Named after Copenhagen’s Betty Nansen Theatre, originally built in 1857 and housed in a wooden pavilion, the chair thinks beyond the walls of the theatre and is the result of the duo’s fascination with the needs of any space to have comfortable seating, regardless of its purpose.
