Tom Dixon
Tom Dixon is known to be a restless innovator who rose to the spotlight in the mid-80s as an individualist, new designer with a line in welded salvage furniture. Whilst working with the Italian famous Cappellini, Tom Dixon designed the widely famous ‘S’ chair. By the late 90s, he became the Creative Director at Habitat, bringing new life to the brand, while maintaining Terence Conran‘s vision of enriching everyday life through simple and modern design. In 2001 Tom Dixon was awarded an OBE by The Queen for his services to British Design.

Design Research Studio was launched in 2007 as an innovative design agency, continuing the Tom Dixon path of creating extraordinary spaces globally. recent projects include reimagining the modern cruise experience for Virgin Voyages, reinventing the layout and interior of the Pullman Hotel in Bercy, the iconic Drugstore Brasserie on Les Champs-Elysees, Paris and designing The Manzoni in Milan, Tom Dixon’s first European hub which acts as a restaurant, shop and office all in one. With headquarters in London’s King’s Cross, Design Research Studio has conceived interiors and exteriors with forward-thinking architecture and interior design, rich in narrative, with a portfolio ranging from hospitality to retail, to residential and monumental complexes.

The Chairs
Born in Tom’s 80’s London workshop, the S Chair has been re-engineered using the latest developments in manufacturing technology for maximum comfort. This chair is upholstered in wool and available in a variety of colours and sits proudly on its steering-wheel inspired cast iron base.
Bird Chaise is a bold sculptural statement that is destined to bring extra colour and shape, movement and comfort into lobbies, breakout areas and homes. With gentle curves and a reduced silhouette, this chaise lounge is carefully balanced to encourage a gentle rocking motion with its gentle curves and reduced silhouette. An original design was first made in 1990 in Tom’s London metal shop, this chair is upholstered in wool and available in a variety of colours.
Originally created on a self-propelled mission to design the world’s lightest metal chair, Pylon was made in a small series in Dixon’s metal workshop in the early ’90s. The latticework of a 3mm diameter steel rod is triangulated for maximum strength – an exercise in a pure unadorned structure.
Designed to hug the body and allowing for multiple sitting positions, this lounge chair is upholstered in wool. Fat is made from moulded foam with a metal leg launching in high gloss black lacquer and made to order upholstery. Manufactured in Europe, hand-finished and upholstered by experienced craftsmen.
Wingback is Tom Dixon’s much-appreciated armchair with its expressive sweeping curves that act as a sculptural intervention. This armchair is upholstered in wool and available in a variety of colours and leg options. The wings provide convenient acoustic protection for mobile phone use and a headrest for quick snoozes.
HYDRO is a limited-edition chair created in collaboration with HYDRO, the biggest aluminium producer in the world. The HYDRO chair is an innovation in aluminium technology. It has been blow-formed at high temperatures and then laser cut by robots. These methods were developed in the automotive industries to make deep and complex forms that were impossible to achieve a few years ago. The ballooned pattern gives strength and rigidity and lends a soft and humorous pop sensibility to the lightweight and shiny metal sheet.
Originally a dramatic and sculptural take on a British design classic, Fan is available as a high back chair, dining chair, stool and table. The stools and chairs have a black leather seat pad, while the chairs feature a curved back, offering support and comfort. Available in Black Birch or Natural Oak.
Re-designed in 2018 for maximum comfort and visual impact, Scoop was originally developed for the Royal Academy of Arts Restaurant in London. This dining chair is upholstered in wool and available in a variety of colours and leg options. Engineered from new foam moulded curves, the Scoop dining chair hugs the contours of the body.

Slab is a stackable chair, made in Lithuania using solid wood Oak. In a natural finish, this modern dining chair is upholstered using leather to maximise its comfort.
