An interview with Héctor Esrawe
Esrawe Studio, based in the famous Mexico City, has favourably impacted the current design business without losing sight of the spirit of Mexican design and culture. Whether it’s an architectural project or a one-of-a-kind artwork, each design is anchored in sustainability and inspired by the country’s rich artisan culture.

Héctor was born in Mexico City in 1968. The start of his career wasn’t as clear as you might assume. The Mexican designer disclosed that he just discovered his love during college when a professional counsellor showed him a book on industrial design that summarised Héctor’s various passions in the first 20 lines. “When I was younger, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was drawn to technical fields such as robotics, but I had never heard of industrial design. When she gave me the book, I saw that all of my interests were combined into that one line, and I didn’t have to read any further”.
He was a Design Professor at UIA from 1997 to 2001, following which he became Design Director at CENTRO Study House, where he founded the Industrial Design Degree. However, it was in 2003 that Héctor decided to create his multidisciplinary design practice, Esrawe Studio, which is now regarded as one of the world’s top design references.

We understand the creative process as something that is contextual, that depends intrinsically on the place, on the person, on the needs, on the audience to be developed.
Héctor Esrawe
Esrawe Studio is a multidisciplinary studio that enjoys creating anything linked to design, from furniture, objects, and interiors to architecture, public space installation, and museography.“My vision is mostly related to creativity, I didn’t want to put a line between all of the fields that I’m attracted to. I managed my way to work with different professionals and be able to create a philosophy of collaboration that allowed me to explore all of these fields that I was attracted to as a designer”.
What has changed throughout time is the start of the designer’s creative process for each job. What began as a chapter in which the team primarily focused on the client’s requests has evolved into entirely other processes in which context and narrative take centre stage. “I don’t jump immediately into creating a solution, first I do research and diagnostic processes to create the narrative of the project before I take a pencil. So it has evolved in a different direction, we work on small projects (such as the candle of shinu) or we work on big designs such as the Arca showroom in Guadalajara, but both of them have the same initial approach in the methodology applied in different scales and timelines”, said Héctor Esrawe.
There is no doubt that the modern design concept has evolved over the last few years, particularly in light of the recent epidemic, but not everything has been negative. He feels that as a culture, we have learnt to appreciate the minor things that were previously overlooked; yet, this concern for natural things has always been present in Héctor’s creations since the beginning of his career. The Mexican designer is presently working on a small hotel near Tulum with only three rooms, making it one of the most intriguing projects he is working on right now.
According to him, there aren’t any magic formulas to success in the design world, he believes that it all starts with being “conscious, rigorous, and understand the impact that our profession can have in transforming a negative aspect into a positive thing for the world”.
