Doshi Levien – Modern Chairs that Transcend Traditional Design
Doshi Levien is an internationally renowned studio due to being able to harmonise culture, technology, industrial design and fine craftsmanship. Founded by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien, the studio’s work is distinctive from others for not only their bond to colour, material and form but also their ability to translate meticulous design ideas to production.
Doshi Levien has created works for leading manufactures such as B&B Italia, Moroso, Kettal, Cappellini, for prestigious international museums and cultural institutions as well as their gallery based in Paris – Galerie Kreo.
Dapper chair project began as a collaboration with the Aga Khan foundation who commissioned Doshi Levien to design a compact lounge chair for student accommodation ‘Victoria Hall’ in Kingscross. Hay of Denmark developed the chair which is now part of their catalogue.Lounge chair for B&B Italia The name Do-maru evokes lightweight Samurai armours made using leather and lacquer that wrap and embrace the body. The chair is composed of two overlapping moulded shells to form an embracing seat which is made comfortable by two inner moulded upholstered pads available in fabric or leather.
Nipa Doshi grew up in Indian and studied at the National Institute of Design in the UK, making her design practice rooted in her different upbringings, with an acute eye for visual culture.
Jonathan Levien has proficiency in fine cabinet production and industrial design, giving him an industrial precision combined with the sensibility of a maker’s hand and deep understanding of materials.

The enveloping woven volumes are combined with generous, boulder-like upholstered seats and soft cushions bringing the elegance, comfort and refinement of indoor furniture to the outdoors. The sensual forms woven in a double weave create pockets of air that lend transparency and lightness to the collection.
